Psychological and Emotional Trauma Healing

Emotional and psychological trauma occurs as the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security. It can leave you struggling with distressing emotions, memories, intrusive thoughts, sleep problems and anxiety that will not go away. Psychological trauma can also leave you feeling disconnected, isolated, or feeling that you are unable to trust other people. You might feel numb or empty inside. Where these aftereffects fail to improve after trauma, they are often called Post-Traumatic Stress and in some circumstances, you may be given a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety, but any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and isolated can result in trauma, even if you are not physically harmed. It’s not what happens to you that determine whether an event is likely to leave you suffering with Post Traumatic Stress, but rather what the experience of the event feels like and means to you. You do not even need to be directly involved in the experience, for example, witnessing a fatal road accident or another person’s suffering can have traumatic consequences for you. The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatised.

Psychological trauma can be caused by:

  • One-time events, such as an injury, accident, rape or a violent attack.

  • Ongoing, relentless stress, such as experiencing traumatic events that occur repeatedly, such as bullying, domestic violence, or childhood abuse/neglect, living in a dangerous neighbourhood, being in combat, working with the sick, suffering and dying, high stress occupations or battling a life-threatening illness.

  • Other common cause of emotional trauma, such as the sudden death of someone close, the breakup of a significant relationship, divorce, surgery, or a shaming or deeply disappointing experience.

In today’s society, news and social media bombard us every day with horrific images of shootings, riots, famines, terrorist attacks, plane crashes, natural disasters and, of course, the Coronavirus pandemic that we all are experiencing and still processing in our life time. Witnessing the suffering of others can overwhelm our nervous system and cause post-traumatic stress.

While traumatic events can happen to anyone, you’re more likely to be traumatised by an event if you are under considerable stress, have recently suffered loss or have been traumatised before—especially if the earlier trauma occurred in childhood

Childhood Trauma: Causes and Effects

Trauma that occurs in childhood, whether physical violence, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, or all the above, can have a profound effect on an individual affecting self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-identity. It can be hard to trust oneself, one’s body, other people or the world. There can be an overwhelming sense of fear and helplessness. Unresolved childhood trauma can carry on over into adulthood and play an ongoing significant role in mental and physical health in adult life, contributing to anxiety, fear, depression, substance use, addictions, eating disorders, suicide, self-destructive behaviours, chronic health problems, problems with confidence, career, money and relationship difficulties. Resolving past traumas by working with a specialist therapist such as myself can result in a profound improvement in all these aspects of life. It is incredibly rewarding work.

Childhood trauma can result from anything that upsets a child’s sense of safety in their world. Examples would include:

  • Separation from a parent

  • Illness or hospital stay

  • Medical procedures, especially if intrusive

  • Verbal, physical, and sexual abuse

  • Emotional bullying or shaming

  • Neglect

  • Inconsistent parenting

  • Unstable or unsafe homelife

  • Domestic violence

Whatever the cause of your trauma, and whenever the trauma happened to you, last week or many years ago, if psychological trauma is causing you distress and suffering can I reassure you that it is treatable? Even if your trauma happened many years ago with the correct treatment from a specialist-trained trauma therapist, you can overcome the pain, learn to trust and connect to others again, and regain your sense of self, health and inner peace again.

If you are aware or suspect that you are suffering from unresolved childhood trauma, post-traumatic stress or PTSD, you can make healing changes. I can help you move on with your life, release the past and reclaim the life that you were born to live.

Chronic Pain Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis

Most clients are very keen to find natural, safe and effective ways to improve and manage their pain so that they can minimise strong pain-killing medications, many of which are addictive, or avoid often painful and risky pain procedures, such as nerve blocks, injections or surgery.

I am experienced working with clients struggling with the full range of different types of pain issues. such as cancer pain, post-injury pain, spinal/neurological damage, painful neuropathies, phantom limb pain, pain associated with paraplegia, IBS pain and other functional pains, Atypical facial pain, Chronic pelvic pain syndromes and so many more. Some clients will present with medically unexplained pain.

Regardless of the type of pain, advanced hypnotherapy treatment, coupled with teaching my clients applied mindfulness techniques, guided visualisation /imagery, self-hypnosis and other powerful methods as appropriate, can bring substantial relieve and help clients find comfort.

Certainly, the research evidence that hypnotherapy helps with pain relief is substantial and well-recognised. The public is often aware of the cases where surgery has been performed under hypnotic anaesthesia alone and if the power of the mind is so great, you too can learn to use the power of your phenomenal mind to bring you the comfort you were born to enjoy.
