The Imposter Syndrome: What It Is and How to Overcome It

Have you ever felt as though, no matter how much progress you make or success you achieve, you don’t truly deserve your accomplishments?


It's feeling like an impostor when you're not. Like you're a fraud and the whole world is going to find you out. Imposter Phenomenon syndrome is a psychological pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments and has a persistent.

While early research focused on the prevalence among high-achieving women, impostor syndrome has been recognized to affect both men and women. Imposter Phenomenon syndrome was first studied in psychology

and is best known as the author of The Impostor Phenomenon: Overcoming the Fear that Haunts Your Success. The impostor phenomenon is an individual experience of self-perceived intellectual phoniness the researchers investigated the prevalence of this internal experience by interviewing a sample of 150 high-achieving women. All of the participants had been formally recognized for their professional excellence colleagues and had displayed academic achievement.


Imposter Phenomenon syndrome downplays how universal the feeling truly is—one that has been established across gender, race, age, and profession. “People who are highly skilled or accomplished tend to think others are just as skilled. “This can spiral into feeling that they don’t deserve accolades and opportunities over other people.”
