How to Identify and Break the Cycle of Stress

Stress management starts with identifying the sources of stress in your life. This isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. identify major stressors such as changing jobs, moving, or going through a divorce, pinpointing the sources of chronic stress can be more complicated. It’s easy to overlook how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours contribute to your everyday stress levels. Sure, you may know that you’re constantly worried about work deadlines, but maybe your procrastination, rather than the actual job demands, is causing the stress.

Delegate responsibility. You don’t have to do it all yourself, whether at home, school or on the job. If other people can take care of the task, why not let them? Let go of the desire to control or oversee every little step. You’ll be letting go of unnecessary stress in the process.

Eat a healthy diet. Well-nourished bodies are better prepared to cope with stress, so be mindful of what you eat. Start your day right with breakfast, and keep your energy and mind clear with balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day.

Regardless of age, gender, faith, profession or nationality – whether you’re a student, employed, self-employed, unemployed or retired – a stay-at-home parent, professional singer, musician, dancer, actor, athlete or public speaker, stress, anxiety and panic knows no boundaries. It can reach anyone and everyone at any given time and without warning.

Stress is an umbrella term used to describe a set of physical, emotional, mental and behavioural responses to a perceived threat. Stress isn’t caused by an event but by our response to the event. Sometimes our stress threshold becomes overwhelming and this can affect us physically (tension, headaches), emotionally (increased worrying), mentally or cognitively (we might think we can’t cope) and behaviourally (we might overeat when we’re too stressed).

According to statistics, 59% of British adults report that their lives are more stressful now than they were five years ago. Additionally, an estimated five million people in the UK experience high levels of stress due to work. The Health and Safety Executive has also calculated that 9.9 million working days were lost in 2014-15 as a result of stress, depression, and anxiety. It's crucial to be aware of the signs and symptoms of stress and take proactive steps to reduce its negative impact, especially when facing challenging situations. Stress can have varied effects on the mind, body, and behavior, and its impact can be detrimental to one's health, mood, productivity, relationships, and overall quality of life.
