Stress Management

Stress management starts with identifying the sources of stress in your life. This isn’t as straightforward as it sounds. identify major stressors such as changing jobs, moving, or going through a divorce, pinpointing the sources of chronic stress can be more complicated. It’s all too easy to overlook how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours contribute to your everyday stress levels. Sure, you may know that you’re constantly worried about work deadlines, but maybe it’s your procrastination, rather than the actual job demands, that is causing the stress.

Delegate responsibility. You don’t have to do it all yourself, whether at home, school or on the job. If other people can take care of the task, why not let them? Let go of the desire to control or oversee every little step. You’ll be letting go of unnecessary stress in the process.

Eat a healthy diet. Well-nourished bodies are better prepared to cope with stress, so be mindful of what you eat. Start your day right with breakfast, and keep your energy up and your mind clear with balanced, nutritious meals throughout the day.

Regardless of age, gender, faith, profession or nationality – whether you’re a student, employed, self-employed, unemployed or retired – a stay-at-home parent, professional singer, musician, dancer, actor, athlete or public speaker, stress, anxiety and panic knows no boundaries. It can reach anyone and everyone at any given time and without warning.

Stress is an umbrella term used to describe a set of physical, emotional, mental and behavioural responses to a perceived threat. Stress isn’t caused by an event, but by our response to the event. Sometimes our stress threshold becomes overwhelming and this can affect us physically (tension, headaches), emotionally (increased worrying), mentally or cognitively (we might think we can’t cope) and behaviourally (we might overeat when we’re too stressed).

Statistics have found that 59% of British adults claim their life is more stressful today than it was five years ago, while five million people in the UK are ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ stressed through work. The Health and Safety Executive also estimates that 9.9m working days were lost due to stress, depression and anxiety in 2014-15. It's important to recognize when the signs and symptoms of stress and take steps to reduce its harmful situation or other stressful challenges that might be affecting your life. Stress affects the mind, body, and behaviour in many ways, and everyone experiences stress differently causing damage to your health, mood, productivity, relationships, and quality of life.
