Jealousy

Jealousy is a complex emotion that encompasses feelings ranging from anger, resentment, inadequacy, helplessness or disgust. In its original meaning, jealousy is distinct from envy the circumstances that lead up to jealousy, jealousy itself as emotion, any attempt at self-regulation, subsequent actions and events and the resolution of the episode.

The narrative can stem from real experiences, thoughts, perceptions, and memories, as well as from imagination and assumptions. It affects people of all ages, genders, and sexual orientations, and is most commonly triggered when a person believes that a valued relationship is threatened through a third party. This threat may be real or imagined. Jealousy is often associated with romantic relationships, but the feeling can arise in almost any type of relationship, from siblings vying for parental attention to coworkers trying to impress a respected boss.

Although jealousy is a painful emotional experience, evolutionary psychologists regard it not as an emotion to be suppressed but as one to heed as a signal or a wake-up call that a valued relationship is in danger and that steps need to be taken.

Even though it may feel taboo, acknowledging jealousy's presence can help strengthen a relationship in the present. Exploring the emotions that underpin jealousy can inspire self-reflection that may help to develop internal coping skills. Being honest with the other party about jealous feelings can spur productive conversations about what the relationship might be missing and how to repair the bond.

During a hypnotherapy session, we will examine the dynamics of the relationship in which you experience jealousy. Jealousy can sometimes bring up unresolved insecurities from the past. It is not just one emotion, but a combination of feelings including fear of loss, a sense of inadequacy, hurt, sadness, pain, anxiety, self-doubt, anger, and sometimes even rage. Hypnotherapy can help resolve past conflicts, allowing you to move forward and feel more trusting and secure.
