Healthy Boundaries

In healthy relationships partners take one another’s feelings into account, show gratitude and respect differences in opinion, perspective and feelings.” In Interpersonal relationships, we often think of boundaries as a bad thing or unnecessary. Isn’t our partner supposed to anticipate our wants and needs? Isn’t that part of being in love? Boundaries provide a way for each individual to maintain their own identity and personal space within professional and personal relationships. In essence, boundaries are the guidelines a person determines for themselves how they want to be treated and what types of interactions they are willing to accept from others.

Healthy boundaries are an important function of people to taking responsibility for their emotions. Having well-developed boundaries in place can lead to healthier relationships and help a person to avoid feeling manipulated or violated. Any boundaries a person determines for themselves should be openly communicated to others.
